I have to say it has taken me a lifetime, that’s more years than many and not nearly as many as some, to truly make this a mantra.
Because life is short and I don’t want to live a single second of it being disingenuous or involving myself in soul crushing work or unhealthy personal relationships.
This has meant lots of letting go and walking away, which can be so terrifying. Especially when walking away might affect your livelihood.
I think this lesson became clearest to me when three years ago I just simply stopped returning the phone calls of a shady band leader who always had drama around paying the band.
He either forgot the money at home and had to go back to pick it up or forgot his checkbook or whatever other lame excuse he came up with. It was getting old and I was getting too old.
I realized his “money noise” was becoming the band’s “money noise” and I just wasn’t going to sign up for it anymore. It was just way too toxic and stupid if you want to know the truth.
Setting the intention to disengage from toxic situations has set me on a healthier path.
We have so many great conversations on the subject of walking away on The Working Singer podcast. This week on episode 8, Kacee Clanton discusses finally leaving a day job to transitioning into being a full time singer working on Broadway and touring with the amazing Joe Cocker.
