The Snooze Button

How come it’s so hard to let go of what we know isn’t working for us? Why is change so hard even when we’re miserable?

I suspect it’s because we’re such creatures of habit. Sometimes even if the friendship, the job, the marriage leaves us feeling depleted we still have a hard time letting go of it. It’s familiar. Sometimes it can take years to gain fresh perspective. But what if it doesn’t have to take that long?

What if we can make that shift right now? Take massive action & make that transformation in the moment?

There are so many habits I’m working on changing. Habits that have kept my life from expanding as much as I know it can. Habits that have kept me closed off & small. Habits that I once believed served me & kept me safe, but simply don’t anymore.

Hitting the snooze bar. Skipping yoga. Avoiding the tough conversation. Watching tv until I fall asleep. These moments where I say, just this once won’t matter, add up to a mediocre way of life. A life full of commitments I’ve made to myself, but rarely honor.

It’s a life that can leave me feeling frustrated & disappointed with myself.

If you listen to my podcast this week with Pat Whiteman, I say I felt like I was a bit out of control. Not a drunken, loud party girl kind of mess, but more of a non-committal, aimless, & lazy kind of mess.

I suppose anyone who knows me wouldn’t call me lazy, but I’d say up until about a year ago I wasn’t being very consistent with caring for my well being & crafting the kind of life I’d like.

I haven’t even had a particularly bad life. I definitely land on my feet most of the time. Maybe that’s just safe.

In any case, I’ve lead my life with a lot of fear, shame, & doubt and these are not tools for shaping an impactful & open life.

I’m figuring out what open & impactful looks like for my simple little being. I aim to live a life full of purpose & meaning. I hope that purpose & meaning makes a difference for others.

What I do know for sure is that I’m creating one that I don’t feel like hitting the snooze button for. We all should wake up to that kind of life.

PS-On the show this week, I mention Hal Elrod’s book The Miracle Morning: The Not So Obvious Secret Guaranteed to Transform Your Life Before 8am. Game changer! Must read!
